What is the basic theory behind 1-2-3 Magic?

Last Updated: Aug 22, 2016 02:43PM CDT
1-2-3 Magic combines elements of family systems theory, cognitive therapy, behavior modification and some elements that are unique to the program.

Family therapy, for example, would predict that the more effective child discipline is in the home, the better mom and dad will get along (and vice versa).

Cognitive therapy involves what you might think of as some "attitude adjustments" that parents have to make, such as understanding The Little Adult Assumption and accepting testing and manipulation as aggravating but normal.

Behavior modification theory includes the notions of anxiety reduction and social reinforcement that are involved in the basic counting method.

Elements that are unique to the 1-2-3 Magic program include the distinction between Start and Stop behavior, the Two Biggest Discipline Mistakes, and the discovery of the Six Kinds of Testing and Manipulation.
